Last night was the opening party for the desigNYC Pilot Projects exhibit at Pratt Manhattan Gallery and it’s worth seeing. DesigNYC is a collective that launched in January to connect nonprofits, community groups, and city agencies serving the public good with stellar pro bono designers, a concept inspired by President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg’s service initiatives. In fact, its motto is “pro bono design solutions transforming New York into a greener, greater, healthier city.” The collective was founded by leaders in the design community, including MoMA’s Paola Antonelli, Interior Design Hall of Famers Deborah Berke, and Zack McKown, and Edwin Schlossberg, who was at the party with his wife Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. The exhibit showcases the first 12 pilot projects, among them the renovation of the Lower East Side Ecology Center’s Fireboat House, its pro bono partner being Andrew Berman Architect, and two Enterprise Community Partners’s children recreation rooms, Andre Kikoski Architect pro bono partner.

DesigNYC plans to issue its next call to nonprofits and design partners for the second round of projects this September. In the meantime, the pilot project exhibit runs through July 31st at 144 West 14th Street, 2nd floor. Documentary shorts on desigNYC projects can be seen here.

I would like to see more images of the projects and hear more about the other designers.
